Liz Cheney Issues Warning to Anti-Trump Republicans Who Won’t Back Harris

Former Representative Liz Cheney on Sunday warned Republicans who are opposed to former President Donald Trump, but refusing to cast a vote for Vice President Kamala Harris amid this year’s election, that it is “not enough.”
Harris scored the endorsements of the Wyoming Republican and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, this week. Both are staunch conservatives, but Liz Cheney has long been publicly critical of Trump, current GOP presidential nominee—particularly after his supporters rioted at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
In their separate endorsements, Dick and Liz Cheney called Trump a “threat” and a “danger,” respectively.
“Because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump but I am voting for Kamala Harris,” Liz Cheney told students at Duke’s Sanford School of Public Policy during an event last week.
In an interview with ABC News’ This Week on Sunday, Liz Cheney further explained her decision to vote for Harris, saying that she’d “never” voted for a Democrat before.
“Donald Trump presents a challenge and threat fundamentally to the republic. We see it on a daily basis. Somebody who was willing to use violence in order to attempt to seize power, to stay in power,” she said.
The Wyoming Republican went on to call out fellow Republicans who are not planning to vote for Trump, but also will not cast a vote for Harris. “Given how close this race is, in my view, again, it’s not enough,” she said.
“You have many Republicans out there who are saying, ‘Well, we’re not gonna vote for him but we will write someone else in’—I think this time around that’s not enough, that it’s important to actually cast a vote for Vice President Harris,” she said.
Trump has repeatedly slammed Liz Cheney, and in March said that she should “go to jail.” He also blasted her and her father on social media after Dick Cheney endorsed Harris.
“Dick Cheney is an irrelevant RINO, along with his daughter, who lost by the largest margin in the History of Congressional Races!” the former president wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform. He also said Liz Cheney should be “prosecuted.”
When reached for comment on Sunday morning, Trump’s campaign referred Newsweek to his Truth Social post.
Although Liz Cheney was largely supportive of Trump up through the 2020 presidential election, she turned strongly against him after the U.S. Capitol riot. Liz Cheney, who was previously in House GOP leadership, was one of just 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump following the assault on the Capitol, and she served as a key member of the January 6 House select committee that investigated the events surrounding that day.
